If the U.S. government wants media attention or not, either way, they couldn’t have really done anything for Haiti before the earthquake happened. Yes, Haiti is a third world country but hey, there are like a 100+ third world countries out there and you can’t expect the U.S. to take care of all of them. It’s like, why does tragedy have to happen for us to give our time to god?

We provide asisstance to them because they lack the necessary funds to support themselves. Also, because they are in such close proximity to the state of Florida many Haitians tend to migrate to the U.S. illegally. In order to keep the Haitians out, it costs a few billion to interdict these people. Instead of spending billions keeping them out. Why not spend just a fraction of that money helping that instead of the billions we spend to interdict them? Over a hundred countries throughout the world have sent help to this little country. What would the U.S. look like if 2nd and 3rd world countries were to give aid while we, the wealthiest and most technologically advanced nation in history were to watch idly? It would be the greatest display of impotency. So far, aproximately 300 million USD have been sent as aid to the country of Haiti. Not one of these U.S. dollars come from taxpayers but come from normal people like you and I who just so happened to have a couple of bucks that somebody else needed, more than they did. =]
